Vermont St. Patrick’s Day 2013 – Parades, Celebrations, Festivities & Other Events

Only three days ’til St. Patty’s and you’ve still not made plans? Well get off yer arses and pull yer socks up ya buncha dossers! Check out our list of VT St. Patrick’s Day events and then come suck some diesel with the rest of us bowsies! What’s that? You’ve heard enough of the phrases I’m clearly stealing on-the-fly from this Irish slang list? Fair enough….

The shamrocks won’t be out here for some time, but people all over the Green Mountain State still know how to throw St. Patrick’s Day parties. Let’s start with events in the Champlain Valley region.

Burlington, VT St. Patrick’s Day

Rí Rá Irish Pub – St. Patrick’s Week

Who says you have to wait until Sunday to honor the “Apostle of Ireland“? Rí Rá Irish Pub in Burlington has been celebrating St. Patrick’s Week since last Sunday, the culmination of which will be the Saint Patrick’s Day Race starting 3/17 at 9AM in front of Rí Rá @ 123 Church St.

SD Ireland Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

Searching for an event the whole family can enjoy? SD Ireland’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade starts at 11am! The Church Street Marketplace’s events calendar has the details on this charitable event to benefit the SD Ireland Cancer Research Fund, which has raised over $2 million for cancer research at UVM.

Solas at the Flynn Center – 3/17/13

Whether you’re looking for an alternative to the pub scene on Sunday or you just need to relax after participating in the Rí Rá race, if you’re in BTV you should check out the Solas show at the Flynn. Here’s how the FlynnTix site (by way of the Philly Enquirer) describes Solas‘ music:

Celtic Cats St. Patrick’s Day Ceili – 3/16

Despite that fact that it’s called the Celtic Cats St. Patrick’s Day Ceili, this event actually takes place the day before, Saturday March 16, but is another can’t miss Irish music and dance event in Burlington nevertheless. Admission is $5 for local college students and $7 for the general public. Burlington Irish Heritage and the Free Press events calendar have all of the details:

The Celtic Cats St. Patrick’s Day Ceili is UVM’s premier Irish cultural event. Since its inception in 2010, it has been the only strictly Irish event on campus each year. Come join the Cats for an afternoon of Irish music and dance. The three levels of dancers will showcase the performance pieces they’ve been working on all year to a mix of traditional and extremely non-traditional music. There will also be an opportunity for audience participation in traditional Ceili (group) dances. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided and attendees are also encouraged to bring an Irish dish to share!

Festival Ceili at Mater Christi School

Can’t get enough ceili? Lucky for you there’s another one on St. Patrick’s Day at Mater Christi. More from the Vermont Irish Heritage Festival:

Festival Ceili 1:00 p.m. – 3 p.m.Ceili is the Irish word for a music, dancing, handclapping good time! The Annual Festival Ceili is fun for the whole family with Irish stepdancing and some of Vermont’s finest Celtic musicians. Hear fiddles and flutes, Irish pipes and pennywhistles, and the bodhran, a traditional Irish frame drum. Area musicians are welcome to bring their instruments and join in for a lively seisun.

Beth Anne McFadden and students of the McFadden Academy of Irish Dance will perform and also lead audience participation Ceili dances.

NOTE: The ceili is at a different location this year – but the same great time is to be had!

The party begins Saturday night at Snow Barn where A Thousand Horses rock the house.

Start Sunday morning off right with Green Eggs & Kegs at Cuzzins at 8am. Enjoy Food and Drink specials all day long and join the party on Cuzzins Deck while Blind Owl Band plays for the lively crowd.

St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt @ Okemo

Here’s another family friendly event you can bring the kids to on Sunday – a shamrock scavenger hunt for the kids and music and dinner for all at Okemo Mountain Resort:

Ten shamrocks will be hidden along Okemo’s trails. When kids find one and bring it back to the Clocktower Base Lodge Ski + Ride School desk, they win a special prize bag filled with goodies. A St. Patrick’s Day Party sponsored by Guinness will feature musical guests from 3-6 p.m. in the Sitting Bull Bar & Restaurant. The party continues at The Killarney with more Celtic music and Guinness draught.

Of course you can take part in any or all of these activities, or skip them all together and ski/ride the mountain for the day!

Vermont Snowshoeing on Valentine’s Day

If you’re not that much of an adrenaline junky, but you’d still like to get outside this Valentine’s Day, Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department’s Snowshoe Candlelight Hike will be a nice way to spend the evening. And the best par is, it’s free!:

6:00PM until 8:30PM at GMCC Kehoe Education Center, 636 Point of Pines Road, Castleton
Come celebrate Valentine’s Day with a candlelight snowshoe hike at the Green Mountain Conservation Camp Kehoe.

Happy New Year Vermont! 2013 Has Arrived – VDW Closed New Year’s Day

Happy New Year everyone! We hope you all had a great time last night and (if needed) a smooth recovery today as we usher in 2013.

Just a quick heads up, Vermont Design Works will be closed today, New Years day, January 1, 2013 but we’ll be back in the office tomorrow morning at 9 AM. Vermont New Year’s Eve 2013 Celebrations & Events – Saying Goodbye to 2012

Still don’t have New Year’s Eve plans? Here are a few of the events happening around VT tonight…

First Night Burlington 2013

As is usually the case, First Night Burlington promises to be the most popular event by far. BFP has the deets:

Downtown Burlington is getting ready to ring in 2013 with the 30th annual First Night Burlington celebrations. Each year about 10,000 people stroll along the city’s frosty streets to hear performers send out the old year and welcome the new with all sorts of live, family-friendly entertainment.

Starting at noon today and carrying into the official start of 2013, Burlington will host more than 100 performances featuring everything from rock bands to circus acts. Here’s a preview of what to expect.

The Free Press goes on to explain that while weather should be about what you might expect this time of year throughout most of the evening, after midnight is a bit of a wildcard with the potential for snow squalls as an Artic blast blows into town. Icy roads and low visibility could quickly become issues for drivers.

BFP also lists some of the entertainment, culminating with the midnight fireworks show, but for the complete list I’d recommend checking out First Night’s own “Artists & Activities” page. Speaking of fireworks, Echo would like revelers to know that they can stay warm while watching the show from inside their new Revision Lakeside Pavilion, as part of Echo’s First Annual Gala, which is part of their 10th anniversary celebration. First Night St. Johnsbury 2013

Seeing as I rarely leave Chittenden County it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’d never heard of First Night in St. Jay, but tonight they’ll be hosting their 20th annual New Year’s Eve celebration. Boston.com has more.

Middlebury: Town Hall Theater – The Horse Traders

Vermont today has the scoop on the New Year’s Eve celebration at Town Hall Theater and the return of Weybridge’s own The Horse Traders as the headliners. The THT’s Executive Director Douglas Anderson says that the band “blew the roof off the place” last year, so it’s no surprise that they brought them back. More details on the event from THT’s calendar:

THT’s NEW YEAR’S EVE at the Middlebury Inn 12/31

Welcome in the New Year in great style. At historic Middlebury Inn we’ll start with a reception, then move on to a sumptuous dinner (with wine included) and an elegant dinner theater entertainment of great singing and great songs conceived and directed by Douglas Anderson. For those who want to party on until midnight, your ticket will also get you admittance to the dance across the street at Town Hall Theater. A portion of your ticket benefits Town Hall Theater.

6:30 pm to 10:30 pm

$80 (plus $8 R&M Tax) – includes reception, dinner, entertainment and gratuity.

Four Columns Inn, Newfane VT – 2012 New Years Holiday

It’s probably a little late to book one of the 3 day packages at the Four Columns Inn, but if you expect to find yourself in SE VT tonight, it couldn’t hurt to contact them and find out what they do have available.

New Year’s at VT Ski Areas – Okemo and Magic Mountain

Ski Vermont has put together quite a comprehensive calendar of events that takes you right through to mid-May, including 2 New Year’s Eve parties tonight:

I’m not one for the cold, but that Okemo event sounds like my kind of party! BTW, have you ever heard of the “Mountain Coaster”? I hadn’t, but it looks awesome!

Finally, Vermont Life has posted a list of 13 events happening around the state, courtesy of the Vermont Dept. of Tourism and Marketing. Rather than steal their list I’m going to make you click over if you want to check out all 13, but here are a few highlights:

13. Fireworks & Torchlight Parade: Carrying flaming torches, Stowe Mountain Resort patrollers ski down the face of the mountain. Enjoy the beauty of Mount Mansfield as it comes alive with a spectacle of lights.

11. Learn to Firewalk this New Year’s Eve: All are welcome to Spirit Hollow’s fourth annual firewalk in North Bennington. No experience or desire to walk the fire is necessary. Space is limited, but overnight accommodations are available in the yurt.

9. Laugh in the New Year: Funny hats, funnier comedians. Ring in the New Year with a dinner buffet, DJ, dancing, champagne and comedy at the Hampton Inn New Year’s Eve Comedy Celebration.

7. New Year’s Eve Dinner at New England Culinary Institute: NECI starts the evening with a champagne reception followed by a multi-course dinner with wine pairings and hand-crafted desserts.

And just in case you haven’t spent enough time on your computer today, when you should be celebrating, WCAX has a list of New Year related items in their “Holiday Helper”, such as “How to clean stains after New Year’s Eve parties”, “Non-alcoholic New Year’s Even punch”, “Top 10 ways to stick to your resolutions this year”, and much more. These aren’t so much “local” events as they are general “tips” articles, but I’ve got to hand it to them for some clever content marketing!

VT Christmas Vacation – Vermont Design Works Out of the Office Dec. 24 & 25, 2012

Vermont Design Works will be closed on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day this year, but we’ll be back in the office on Wednesday December 26. We hope you all get to enjoy a long weekend off too!

And if you’re looking for something unique to do this Christmas season, maybe a trip to Billings Farm is in order. Starting this Saturday through the first of the year (with the exception of Christmas day) the farm and museum will be offering a variety of activities the whole family is sure to enjoy:

December 22 – January 1 (Closed Dec. 25) 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Making historic Christmas ornaments, pomanders, and snowflakes; candle dipping. December 26 – January 1: Horse-drawn sleigh or wagon rides; sledding with jack jumpers, if snow conditions permit. Friday, December 28, Carolyn Guest from St. Johnsbury, VT will demonstrate making snowflakes with sheep shearing shears. Visitors may experiment making their own snowflakes using scissors.

Back from Thanksgiving Holiday

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend and if you were so inclined, got some serious Black Friday Christmas shopping done. (Don’t forget, today is Cyber Monday!)

As you may know we were closed last Thursday and Friday as we celebrated Thanksgiving, but we’re thankful to be able to return to our busy office and our normal 9-5, M-F schedule this week. I’m also thankful that the news in Vermont is usually more strange than scary, like when Roger Pion allegedly crushed 8 police cruisers with a tractor because he was angry about an earlier arrest for pot possession and resisting arrest, later taking the no infamous shirtless mugshot.

I’m thankful that I’ve never been tempted to use the corny phrase “Turkey Day”, like far too many embarrassing fathers do all over the country each year. (Also, for future reference and unrelated to Thanksgiving, I can’t be held responsible if I catch you saying things like “baby bump”, “hubby” or “expecially”. Let’s just say hearing any of those doesn’t fill me with thankful feelings.)

Thanksgiving Weekend – Vermont Design Works Out of Office Until 11/26

Just a quick reminder that we’ll be out of the office Thursday and Friday to celebrate Thanksgiving with friends and family. We’ll return at 9AM on Monday, November 26.

Now, apropos of nothing, I present to you a weird, several years old, Thanksgiving/NY ad featuring Robert De Niro as a pilgrim and Billy Crystal as a turkey. No, seriously:

And if it’s not yet Thursday when you’re reading this but you’d still like to get in the Vermont Thanksgiving spirit, check out this Burlington Free Press article about a Maple Wind Farm, a turkey farm in Huntington, VT. It’s probably too late to order one of their birds, but it’s nice to know that there are local farmers here in Vermont raising Thanksgiving turkeys!
